Recent News:

October, 2007:

-NOW Ensemble finished mixing and mastering our first album, and had a very successful fundraising concert for the production of the album as well as our operating costs for the coming year.  There will be a "sneak peak" CD tour later this month, and the official release will come by the end of the year.

-"Behind Forgotten Eyes," the first film that I scored, won best film in its category ("Conflict and Resolution") at the Hamptons International Film Festival.  The film features narration by YunJin Kim from "Lost."

August, 2007:

-I'm very happy to report that I  was appointed Adjunct Professor of Musicianship at Duquesne University.

-July 4 was the premiere of the feature documentary, "The End of New Music," shown at The Anthology in NYC, directed by Stephen Taylor.  NOW Ensemble and NEWSPEAK were featured in this documentary during an east coast tour, and so I and my music appear in this movie, along with fellow composers Judd Greenstein, David Little, and Missy Mazzoli, who organized the tour.

April 2007:

--The NOW recording session was a great success, thanks to all of the performers, Judd, and Dan Bora, the recording engineer.  We are now in the mixdown process, and hope to release the album soon.

--I will list more performances for the Spring as soon as details become available!

February 2007:

--I will be in New York for the first week of March for NOW Ensemble's recording sessions and photo shoot.

January 2007:

--Over the next few months, I will be working on the following commissions:  a song cycle for Timothy Jones and the VOX Trio, a song cycle for Royce Blackburn and Louise Pinkerton, and a new work for the Duquesne University Contemporary Ensemble.  I have also started working on an electronic music project, and I plan to release a recording of electroacoustic pieces some time next year.  Also, I now have a MySpace site.

December 2006:

--NOW Ensemble just finished learning and performing student works during the Yale and Princeton residencies, essentially doubling the repertoire.  We also just learned that we have received a grant from the Aaron Copland Foundation.  Many thanks to the AMC and the Aaron Copland Foundation!  In November, we were cited in the New Yorker by Alex Ross as a "deft young group gaining attention" in the tradition of Steve Reich and Bang on a Can.  Thank you, Mr. Ross!

July 2006:

--Finished recording the film score for the upcoming film, "Behind Forgotten Eyes," a bold new documentary that advocates for the Korean comfort women of WWII. Go to www.behindforgotteneyes.com for details. This marks my return to performing, as I play the piano in this piano trio that gently leads the viewer from scene to scene. Violin: Jonathan Moser; Cello: Elisa Kohanski; Piano: Patrick Burke. A recording will be available soon.

--IonSound Project has recorded Compound Fracture for their demo CD. Percussionist Eliseo Rael created an instrument for this recording based on my original intentions to have most of the percussion played on various tin cans, a la John Cage. The percussion is now completely transparent and serves as a color.

Last Season(2006-2007):

Sept. 21: NOW Ensemble begins a residency at Yale University.

Sept. 28, 7:30pm: Gallerie Icosahedron, N. Moore St., New York, NY 10013 (212-966-3817). NOW Ensemble will be premiering a new work by William Brittelle; it's an emotional tour through the recent travails of Michael Jackson's life, expressed musically, and filled with quotes from his songs. Along with Michael Jackson, NOW will play a full evening of music from our past seasons, including my own piece Hypno-germ.

Nov. 24, 8pm: Affogato Coffee House, Bellevue, PA (in Pittsburgh). E.M.P. returns to perform a wide variety of old-time American songs and tunes. In this one, I will be featured more prominently as a singer!

Dec. 29, 7pm: Affogato Coffee House, Bellevue, PA (in Pittsburgh). E.M.P.  More old-time, Carter family songs, and Americana.

Jan. 6, 3pm: U.S. Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, George Mason University, Center for the Arts, 4400 University Dr., Fairfax, VA.  Jim Flowers and Nancy DeSalvo will premiere the sax and piano piece I composed for them last spring, entitled Night Music.

Jan. 19 (time TBA): North American Saxophone Alliance 2007 Regional Conference, Penn State School of Music.  Jim Flowers and Nancy DeSalvo will give an encore performance of Night Music.

Feb. 13, 2pm:  This concert was canceled due to snow, and will be rescheduled.  Jim Flowers and Nancy DeSalvo were to perform Night Music at the Westminster College Faculty Showcase.

Feb. 20, 8:30pm:  Bloomfield Bridge Tavern.  This is really Emily's show, but the First Unitarian Church folk orchestra plays the first half, and I join Emily for her original songs plus some other Americana, including Tom Waits, on the second half.

Mar. 2, 8pm:  BAM Cafe in Brooklyn, NY.  NOW Ensemble plays some of its old rep, plus a premiere by Andrew McKenna Lee.

Mar. 18, 2pm: Wave Hill, Bronx, NY.  NOW Ensemble performs some of its best repertoire, including Hypno-germ.

Mar. 21, 8pm:  Frick Fine Arts Building on Forbes Ave. in Oakland (Pittsburgh, PA).  $5 student, $10 adult, free for under 15.  IonSound Project returns with a flute and piano arrangement of Sundown, the second movement from Night Music, among other modern works.  Influenced by gamelan, minimalism, jazz, and Stravinsky, this piece is closer to the fusion that I have been trying to achieve than any previous attempt.  Thank you, Peggy and Rob.  A great performance-- I look forward to more collaborations with IonSound.  And thank you Barbara Edelman, whose poetry added greatly to the experience of the concert.

Other concerts with NOW and IonSound were never listed in my website-- I'll enter these in later for archival purposes

Edge-cutting new music for flute, clarinet, electric guitar, piano and contrabass. --This concert really established a new kind of chamber ensemble sound. The premiere of my new version of an old piece, plus four world premieres from Missy Mazzoli, Mark Dancigers, Nico Muhly, Miriama Young and Judd Greenstein were all unique and beautiful works that I think will help to define the sound of our ensemble. Thank you NOW Ensemble!

May 21, 7:30 pm: Bellefield Hall, Pittsburgh, PA (Oakland). IonSound performs Compound Fracture among other new works. --IonSound should be touring nationally-- and anyone interested in new music that's played exceptionally well, by musicians who really communicate with each other when they're playing, check out this group (they also have a page on MySpace). IonSound includes the people named above, and also Eliseo Rael, who was featured prominently on percussion in my piece.
